Light Parade.

Light Parade.

At 8:50 pm, the community-made preparations for each original neighborhood of  Cholula. The ten original neighbors of Cholula wait at the bottom of the Pyramid, sometimes in Xelhua square in front of the Pyramid. When each actual neighbor has their correspondent statue to lead the way, all function with the company of the Virgin of Remedios.
The Virgin lives on top of the Pyramid and is an integral part of Cholula. The town had made preparations to celebrate the Virgin, so they had prepared everything for the following weeks.
The light parade consisted of the ten statues from the neighbors, and their congregations accompanied them through the streets of Cholula. They were making stops in important churches of Cholula.
There they celebrate as if people were there just for a short time and churches accept their respect, and they celebrate with fireworks, music, and some chants all night.

The statues are from the ten temples neighbors from:

1. San Cristobal Tepontla. San Cristobal is the saint, and the name Tepontla is from Nahuatl words, meaning “near the scree,”

2. San Matias Cocoyotla

San Matias is the saint of the town, and the name Cocoyotla means: “hill of the coyote or the coyote that eats early corn,”

3. San Pablo Tecama. The saint is San Pablo, and the meaning of Tecamac is a word from Nahuatl, “in the moth of stone,”

4. Magdalena Coapa. Also known as Apletaixpan, it is composed of three Nahuatl words. A comes from Atl – water, Petla- tension, Ixpan- front, and the last one, Coapan, means place of snakes.

5. San Tiago Miquixtla. The saint Santiago is represented as the saint riding his horse, and with his moro, it is a small size, but the importance of the saint is representative,

6. Santa maría Xixitla. The name Xixitla means migration, and the saint is Maria,

7. San Miguel Tianguisnahuatl, the Church is dedicated to the angel Miguel the Church used to be connected to the part of the convent of naturals in Cholula,

8. Jesus Tlatempa: the saint is a reference to the ascension of Jesus

9. San Juan Calvario refers to Juan Bautista, and Jesus Calvario comes with the name xi

10. San Pedro Mexicaltizingo

11. And the Virgin of Remedios.

On the first of September, the statues made the parade through the streets of Cholula; they arrived and celebrated the day of the Virgin of Remedios.
At the Church, the priest waits, and the people wait for the subsequent ceremonies during the night. Also, the people present have music, firework, and happiness.
The whole celebration ended on the ninth of September when there was music and a mass, and the day concluded with Barter Day and the Burn of the Potbellies, and the New celebrations began.

Barter day of Cholula.

Barter day is also an important day. It happens on the eighth of September and celebrates the town of Cholula. The marked day with a mass, and people celebrate with music and fireworks to let people know there is a celebration. In the Zocalo, early, the people set their places where they could share their products without any money interaction.
The main products people share are fruits from the local towns like apples, pears, and chile poblano (a type of big chile that people eat. There are two main types, green and red).
All the products are for exchange without money if the merchants want. Pöeple from Cholula and Puebla also go there to exchange what they have, like clothes, toys, and electronics that are useful and people can use. The primary interaction is that children can exchange their stuff for other products.
Some people allow you to interact and exchange what you have, but others need the money and tell you immediately.
I love that it feels like old times when people can share what they have. This barter day is only allowed in the Zocalo, not outside.

Burn of potbellied.

Also, on the eighth of September, around 2 pm and 4 pm, the main butlers representing the principal churches of Cholula gather to celebrate their closing ceremony.
They reunited close to the Church of Remedios, and to celebrate the end of their year, they summoned people and prepared big dolls as a representation of people or themselves, and they called it potbellied.
Inside these dolls, they put fresh fruit and wait their turn until all the potbellies burns. They burn it and use fireworks. It is a tradition from ancient times where people sacrifice real people and celebrate the harvest’s conclusion and preparation for the next season.
The celebration of the Virgin of Remedios is a mix of other ancient days and the mix between the old days with the new made efficient and complete with the recent days.
Also, the mix between traditional days with the catholic made it so exciting and part now of the new Cholula, one that you have to be there to enjoy the celebration.
Each Year it changes how it is distributed, but the tradition is there of the celebration of the Virgin of Remedios, a mix between the old and the new traditions.
